The thing that actually changes your day
The northern coast of Santa Catarina has two quite different beach geographies living within a few kilometres of each other: sheltered coves with calm water, and stretches facing the open ocean with real surf. For anyone travelling with small children that distinction matters more than any ranking of best beaches, because it decides whether the day is relaxed or spent on constant watch.
The useful part is that you do not have to pick one. Staying in Penha, both types are minutes away, and you can decide on the day depending on the wind.
What to expect by season
Remember that seasons are inverted here. December to February is Brazilian summer and the region is full, with New Year as the peak. That is not a problem in itself — the crowd is part of the character of the Brazilian coast in summer — but it changes logistics: parking near the sand goes early and beach kiosks have a wait.
March to November is a different town. Cooler water, near-empty beaches, the same scenery. If the point of the trip is rest rather than atmosphere, it is the best window of the year, and it is also when Beto Carrero has the shortest queues.
When the sea does not cooperate
It will happen, particularly with a southerly wind. The building's pool and hot-tub deck cover a full day without anyone getting into a car.
Further afield, the region has options that do not depend on the sea, all within a few kilometres: a water park, an aquarium in Balneário Camboriú, a panoramic observation wheel, and a nature theme park in Balneário Piçarras. That is enough material for two or three rainy days, which in practice means a cold front does not ruin the trip.
A note on walking
Being 250 metres from the sand sounds like a detail and is not. It means going down in flip-flops, coming back for lunch, and going down again at four in the afternoon without reorganising anything. Guests staying two kilometres away make that trip once a day, by car, and end up spending less time on the beach than they planned.

Which beach nearby is best with small children?
Cove beaches, being more sheltered, have calmer water than those facing the open ocean. Around Penha and Balneário Piçarras both types are within a few minutes' drive, so you can choose according to the day and the tide.
Is the beach nearest the apartment good for swimming?
The sand is around 250 metres away, an easy walk in flip-flops. Conditions vary with wind and tide, as on any beach on the Santa Catarina coast, so it is worth looking at the sea before taking children down.
What are the beaches like in high season?
Busy. January and the New Year period concentrate the crowds, and both sand and parking are contested from mid-morning onwards. Arriving early or going late in the afternoon changes the experience completely.
What is there to do when the sea is rough?
The building's pool and hot-tub deck cover a whole day without leaving. Beyond that, the region has a water park, an aquarium and a nature theme park within a few kilometres, all independent of the sea.
